Gone but never forgotten.

Dad

About us, or more about Me.

Welcome! As they  always say here.

Anyone coming to Egypt for the first time, To see the Nile and the Pyramids from the plane, when you book your flight make sure if possible you get a window seat on the left hand side of the plane, that’s the left as you look forward to the pilot.

As Deane (our son) and I were flying to Egypt July 2001, Looking through the window Thirty minutes out of Cairo airport to see the grey colorless desert turn into little grey colorless  Lego blocks that are in fact, five story  block of units on the out skirts of the city, we then bank to the right just as we see the Nile river snaking it’s way below us, it is then that I saw the pyramids for the first time on the far side of the Nile.

I remember thinking “there is suppose to be three of these pointed things, right” looking around I then see three neat pointed pyramids nearer to Cairo but still on the far side of the Nile, I had been looking at the Saqqara pyramids, silly me I thought there were only three pyramids in Egypt, it turns out there are hundreds.

It’s about now I turn to check on Deane  who has been throwing up, on and off since we left Singapore twelve hours earlier. I say “Look the pyramids” and he’s sad sick eyes look back as if to say “ I don’t give a sh#t, I just want off this dam plane”!!!

We hadn’t seen his mom (Shereen) for three months, she left Australia for Cairo to find a flat/apartment and get things ready for us.

So stepping off the plane was huge for both of us,  I mean HUGE!!! :-) He was happy his stomach had stop churning  and I was happy mine had just started to churn.:-)

If your still here and asking how do I know the left hand side of the plane will get the view? Its because here in Egypt the wind is mostly from the north so the approach to Cairo airport is always the same.

Anyway We came to live here for one year, that was 4 years ago, they say if you stay for one year, you never leave, we will see, we plan to move to Dubai in the next few months Inch Allah (god willing, as they say here)

I can now understand why, once you get over the visual shock of the dirt and drab buildings, the bad roads, the traffic and the noise, not to mention the crowds and heat, (June & July) its not easy but if you can get past that lot, then you start to see the people as they are, Patient, kind, caring, considerate, thoughtful and fun loving.

I have said this many many times to many people, Since moving here I have never ever felt unsafe or threatened in any part of this country and I mean day or night.

To me that is a huge statement to make as there are parts of Sydney, Australia, I would think twice before going there in the day time and my birth country of England, forget it.

If Australia was like this I would be back tomorrow, ok the day after tomorrow then.

It upsets me that so many people think of Moslems and think of terrorist, now I think that they are the most caring people on this planet, if you break down in a car they come from all over to help.

If there is a car accident and the two drivers start to argue then people rush in pull then apart, push them into their car and tell to forget it and they do. In 4 years I have only seen one punch thrown and that was thrown at a traffic policemen, and what do you think happened? Passers buy stopped it and sent then off in different directions.

This is an amazing place and people. Do one thing and come and see for yourself.
